To the Oktoberfest with subway, tram, bus and S-Bahn
The easiest way to Theresienwiese: Munich’s public transport system. S-Bahn, U-Bahn, bus and tram. Many routes lead to Oktoberfest.
Travelling by public transport during Oktoberfest – info and tips
During Oktoberfest S-Bahn, U-Bahn, busses and trams are more frequent than normal. However it can still get pretty cramped. Since Theresienwiese is very centrally located, the routes are short. Special highlight: The staff at the U-Bahn station Theresienwiese who keep everyone safe on the platform with humor and Bavarian charm. Theresienwiese station is of course at its fullest during Oktoberfest. If you’re travelling with kids, it’s better to use the U-Bahn stations Goetheplatz, Poccistraße or Schwanthalerhöhe. Practical tip: get the free app “MVG Fahrinfo München” which you can use to easily plan your journey by public transport in Munich. You can also buy the right ticket online in seconds. And during Oktoberfest the app can even speak in Bavarian dialect! A Riesngaudi.
Taking the U-Bahn to Theresienwiese
The lines U4 (green) and U5 (yellow) take you from, for example, Odeonsplatz, Karlsplatz/Stachus or Hauptbahnhof directly to Theresienwiese in a few minutes. For those for whom Theresienwiese station is too busy, you can travel one stop further to Schwanthalerhöhe.
The U3 (orange) and U6 (blue) go from Odeonsplatz, Marienplatz or Sendlinger Tor, arriving in approx. 5 minutes at Goetheplatz or, one station further, Poccistraße. From here it is just a few minutes walk to the east and south entrances to Oktoberfest.
Taking the S-Bahn to the Oktoberfest
The main S-Bahn lines (S1 to S8) all go to Hackerbrücke: for example, it’s 2 minutes from Hauptbahnhof, 5 minutes from Marienplatz and 10 minutes if you get on at Ostbahnhof. From Hackerbrücke station you can comfortably walk to the main entrance of Oktoberfest in 10 minutes. You can’t get lost, simply follow the people in Dirndls and Lederhosen!
Taking the bus and tram to Oktoberfest
There are some bus lines you can take to Theresienwiese:
- MetroBus line 53 to Schwanthalerhöhe
- MetroBus line 58/68 to Georg-Hirth-Platz, Beethovenplatz or Goetheplatz
- MetroBus line 62 to Hans-Fischer-Straße, Poccistraße or Herzog-Ernst-Platz
- StadtBus line 134 to Schwanthalerhöhe
And of course you can get the Straßenbahn, which is called the “tram” in Munich.
- Lines 18/19/29 to Holzapfelstraße or Hermann-Lingg-Straße
Lines 16/17 take you to Hackerbrücke, from which you can walk to Oktoberfest in 10 minutes.

Mit der U-Bahn zur Theresienwiese
Die Linien U4 (grün) und U5 (gelb) fahren z.B. vom Odeonsplatz, Karlsplatz/Stachus oder Hauptbahnhof in wenigen Minuten direkt zur Station Theresienwiese. Wem’s dort zu voll ist, der kann auch eine Station weiterfahren bis zur Station Schwanthalerhöhe.
Die U3 (orange) und U6 (blau) fahren vom Odeonsplatz, Marienplatz oder Sendlinger Tor in ca. fünf Minuten zum Goetheplatz oder, eine Station weiter, zur Poccistraße. Von hier sind es jeweils nur wenige Minuten zu Fuß zu den östlichen und südlichen Eingängen zum Oktoberfest.
Mit der S-Bahn zur Wiesn
Die Linien der Stammstrecke (S1 bis S8) fahren alle zur Hackerbrücke: zum Beispiel zwei Minuten vom Hauptbahnhof aus, fünf Minuten vom Marienplatz und zehn Minuten, wenn man am Ostbahnhof einsteigt. Von der Station Hackerbrücke aus geht man gemütlich ca. 10 Minuten bis zum Haupteingang des Oktoberfests. Verlaufen unmöglich, einfach den Menschen in Dirndl und Lederhosen folgen!
Mit Bus und Tram aufs Oktoberfest
Es gibt mehrere Buslinien, mit denen man die Theresienwiese erreichen kann, u.a.:
- MetroBus-Linie 53 bis Haltestelle Schwanthalerhöhe
- MetroBus-Linie 58/68 bis Haltestelle Georg-Hirth-Platz, Beethovenplatz oder Goetheplatz
- MetroBus-Linie 62 bis Haltestelle Hans-Fischer-Straße, Poccistraße oder Herzog-Ernst-Platz
- StadtBus-Linie 134 bis Haltestelle Schwanthalerhöhe
Und natürlich kann man auch mit der Straßenbahn fahren, die in München Tram heißt:
- Linie 18/19/29 bis Haltestelle Holzapfelstraße oder Hermann-Lingg-Straße
Die Linien 16/17 bringen Euch bis zur Haltestelle Hackerbrücke, von wo aus man in 10 Minuten zu Fuß auf der Wiesn ist
