Bavarian for beginners

Maß, Haferlschuah und Busserl: Our Oktoberfest language guide

Of course people will understand you when you speak English or German on the Oktoberfest. But with a few Bavarian language skills you can make an impression on the locals. Comedian Liesl Weapon explains the most important vocabulary for the Oktoberfest.

Important Note

Unfortunately, the Oktoberfest cannot take place in 2020 due to the spread of Covid-19.

Bavarian for beginners

Probably the most common pronunciation error on the Oktoberfest? To pronounce the ‚Maß‘ with a long ‚a‘. In the Bavarian dialect the ‚a‘ is pronounced shortly, so you say ‚Mass‘ explains Liesl Weapon. Other important words for small talk in the tent? Girls and boys are ‚Madln und Buam‘, a kiss is called ‚Busserl‘ and ladies with a beautiful décolleté have ‚Hoiz vor da Hüttn‘.

Not every Wiesn visitor will find Bavarian so easy to pronounce. Cabaret artist Liesl Weapon has put some oft hem to the test - more in the video:
