Flight ban over the Oktoberfest

Rules for drones at the Oktoberfest

They deliver spectacular images from the air - and would therefore be ideal for a flight over the Theresienwiese. But are drones allowed during the Oktoberfest?

Flight ban over the Oktoberfest

"O'zapft is! To a peaceful Oktoberfest!" With these words mayor Dieter Reiter traditionally opens the Munich Oktoberfest. However, to make the Oktoberfest a peaceful event, the safety of all visitors is the top priority every year. For this reason, there is a general ban on flying over the Theresienwiese during the Oktoberfest.

Heavy penalties for drones above the Oktoberfest

Last year, the Federal Ministry of Transport and Digital Infrastructure issued a so-called flight restriction area with a radio communication obligation during the Oktoberfest. This means that no aircraft, including drones, may be in an area about 11 kilometres in diameter above the festival grounds. The airspace is strictly monitored by police helicopters. If you violate the ban, you will face a fine or even imprisonment.

Alternative photo spots for your Oktoberfest panorama

For many photographers, drone photos of the Oktoberfest certainly seem attractive, especially as the viewing platform of the St. Paul’s Church is closed during the Oktoberfest 2019. But you can also get a great panoramic view over the Theresienwiese from the Bavaria statue or the Ferris Wheel.
