Oktoberfest tradition since 1869
It’s all happening at the Schichtl: The festival tent with a legendary theater stage has something to offer all day long – from an early morning pint, lunch or children’s meals, to the traditional Oktoberfest party in the evening.
Intangible Cultural Heritage of Bavaria
In March 2026, this traditional theater, which dates back more than 150 years, was inscribed on the list of Intangible Cultural Heritage in Bavaria. This decision was based on the expert opinion of an independent panel of experts, which conducted a professional evaluation of all applications submitted in Bavaria using uniform criteria in accordance with the UNESCO Convention.
Since 2003, UNESCO has increasingly brought intangible cultural expressions into the public spotlight. The goal is to raise global awareness of traditional knowledge and skills that form an essential part of our everyday culture, as well as to promote measures that contribute to their preservation and further development.
What guests can expect at the Wirtshaus im Schichtl
What’s special: The healthiest place to eat at the Oktoberfest
If you value organic food, especially when it comes to the many meat dishes, this is the place for you. The Schichtl sources its quality foods exclusively from regional providers. New in 2025 was a separate bar area and additional 49 guests.
The audience: gourmets with black humor
Guests of the Schichtl are gourmets who require that even their “last meal” is made with ecologically farmed ingredients. You might want to observe the hourly spectacle with a pinch of black humor. The colorful mixture of locals and visitors do just that happily and in large numbers.
The menu: hearty food and game
The menu offers a wide and changing variety of meat and vegetarian dishes every day, including savory dishes, game dishes and desserts, such as schweinsbraten and kaiserschmarrn. A special menu is available for kids all week long, and between 10 am and 12 noon from Monday to Friday, you can enjoy a morning pint at the Schichtl during the authentic Munich weisswurst breakfast.
Only here: daily decapitations
Since 1869, dozens of people have lost their heads at the Schichtl during the Oktoberfest — a gruesome yet entertaining practice that has survived over the generations. The “decapitation of a live person by guillotine on a brightly lit public stage” is celebrated 25 times a day. This ritual is one of the oldest Oktoberfest traditions and it is almost as old as drinking at breakfast, and much older than the closing of the beer tents. For the Wiesn 2023, the director of the Wiesn Theater "Schichtl", Manfred Schauer, and his executioner Ringo had the 15,000 people - played - beheaded. That's the population of a small town.
