Festive start to the opening of the Oktoberfest

Parade of the Oktoberfest landlords and breweries

When the Oktoberfest tent owners take the beer to the Theresienwiese, the people of Munich know: Oktoberfest season is here again! With festively decorated wagons and brewery carriages, the landlords move to the festival area on Saturday, September 19 2026 at 10.35 am.

Of course, the Munich Schäffler will also be marching in the parade.

The parade of the Oktoberfest landlords and breweries marks the official start of Oktoberfest. It takes place on the first Saturday of the Oktoberfest, before the famous “Ozapft is!” at noon. This is followed by the traditional costume and hunters’ parade at 10 am on Sunday, September 20, 2026.

The parade route

The parade begins at the corner of Josephspitalstraße behind the Sendlinger Tor, continues onto Sonnenstraße, and turns left onto Schwanthaler Straße. From there, it proceeds straight ahead to the Bavariaring, from where it heads directly onto Wirtsbudenstraße and into the respective festival tents. Every year, around 1,000 participants take part in the festive procession. While guests in the tents eagerly awaited the tapping of the first keg, people outside were busy taking selfies with the parade floats and horse-drawn carriages. At 12 noon sharp, the mayor opens the Oktoberfest in the Schottenhamel Festhalle with the traditional cry: “Ozapft is!”
